Fractured sternum is a typical sharp chest problems usually felt unexpectedly. In many of the cases, the sternum pain is mistaken like a heart attack due to similar symptoms. Another cause for the sternum pain can be due to anklyosing spondilitis which is diagnosed by blood tests and it is a hereditary disease. This affects the joints within the bones in the spine minimizing back.But the major reason for the sternum pain is costochondritis. You now might wonder. What is this costochondritis? It is just an injury caused in the ribs which connect the sternum towards the rib cartilage. This injury may be caused by any strain or pressure created when lifting some heavy objects or moving something heavy with much force to the ribs and sternum. This will cause an inflammation which gives tenderness and soreness severe pain in the chest bone and it might be worsened if you increase the pressure towards the breast or even when stretching.
This pain can range from minor to severe. The pain doesn’t go away easily and it’s easy to reinjure the area. It doesn’t usually hurt to carry on moving around but can be painful to do so. People often seek immediate pain alleviation.
Your doctor will usually diagnose costochondritis by pressing about the area where the ribs satisfy the chest bone (sternum). If the area is tender and sore, costochondritis is the most likely cause of your sternum pain or heart problems. You want to make sure that costochondritis is the correct diagnosis and that it isn’t heart-related. If you press on the areas yourself, do so very gently which means you don’t reinjure the area. If you don’t have every other pain that radiates to the neck or arms nor any numbness, chills or perhaps a fever than you are not likely to have a heart problem.
Fit everything in you can not to reinjure the area. Costochondritis often comes about when people move furniture or any other large items or in contact sports. Leaning over and picking up items out of reach can also cause it although that could occur with costochondritis in the sides more so.
Sometimes a rib belt might help. Make sure to stop doing whatever makes the pain worse.
Slowly return to regular activities.
In most cases, sternum pain is something that can easily be treated.? Additionally, a variety of things could be done to prevent this kind of pain from returning.? This isn’t to say that pain of the type is not real or it does not hurt but it does provide some peace of mind in knowing that seldom is pain of the bone associated with anything overly serious.
Ensure that you protect yourself so further inflammation doesn’t occur. Sometimes costochondritis can become chronic when the area is injured over and over again. But generally it will get better in a few days. These are just a few of the things you can do to help heal faster and get pain relief.
