The medial malleolus fracture is a fracture of the medial malleolus. Now, wondering what the medial malleolus is? That would take a little explanation from my side and a little more time from your side. Our lower leg consists of two long bones, viz. tibia and fibula. Towards the tibia’s lower extremity there is a bony prominence on the ankle’s side which we call the medial malleolus. Aversion forces that lead to an ankle sprain, lower leg fractures, foot fractures etc. are what are known to cause a medial malleolus fracture .
The mechanism of injury of these fractures is not clear but is thought to be similar to the one of talar neck and pilon fractures, dorsi flexion but with added axial compression. The axial force is transmitted through the sagittal axis of the dome of talus and usually produces comminution of the talar body or tibial pilon. Supination may have contributed to this injury in view of the medial malleolus fracture.
A fractured ankle can range from a simple break in one bone, such as a lateral malleolus fracture which involves a fracture to the fibula, to a trimalleolar fracture, which involves the fracture of three bones of the leg. This type of fracture can dislocate your ankle and may sometimes require that it not bear weight for an extended period of time after surgery.
If there is no kind of displacement involved in the medial malleolus fracture , the use of crutches, casts or protective boots that immobilize the injured foot are enough for the fracture to heal. In case there is a displacement involved, the bone would have to be re-aligned and fixed with the help of screws and plates; this technique is called anatomical reduction.
Surgical goal is to achieve anatomical reduction, maintaining the stability of the ankle points to maximize the recovery of ankle joint function and reduce the uneven surface caused by joint trauma or arthritis and soft tissue Unstableness caused by the incarceration of the probability of occurrence of nonunion. our hospital from 2004 to 2007 small incision open reduction and Kirschner positioning, 1 Zimmer 2 stainless steel hollow screw fixation method of treatment of simple medial malleolus avulsion fractures in 20 cases, results were satisfactory, the report is as follows.
